Hypnobabies

Status: 30 weeks, 5 days

So I promised y'all a while back that I would tell you about all the exciting things that are going on as we prepare for Waffle's arrival. Sorry to inform you that it is not nearly as eventful as with Eli. However, one new thing we decided to try (well, I decided, and Joel went along with it) is Hypnobabies.

I first heard about the program from a friend who used it during the birth of her daughter. Then, as I read through other birth stories, I found that it was actually a very common technique that helped a lot of moms have successful, un-medicated births. After reading more about it, we decided to invest in the home-study program (you can also take it as a 6-week class, which is what my friend did). I knew that I couldn't convince myself, let alone Joel, to commit to being somewhere every week, so I figured this would be a good compromise.

When most people think of hypnosis, they think about the goofy people up on a stage being told to do things such as "cluck like a chicken", which they do, and then are brought out of hypnosis and don't remember anything. That is not how this program works, at all.

The basis of Hypnobabies is to retrain our minds to view birth differently (than mainstream). Over the course, participants learn to create a "Bubble of Piece" (BOP) to keep out unwanted horror stories and the like, respond to cues that create a sense of inner peace, and gain confidence in themselves as women and mothers.

My intentions going into the program were to use it as a tool to help me relax during my pregnancy (as I am prone to becoming anxious) and to focus on this experience being different from my first. Hypnobabies stresses that "this birth and this baby are unique unto themselves" and not to dwell on the past.

I listen to the tracks each night as I go to sleep. I practice visualizing the birth I desire, and Joel helps me by practicing the cues he will use help me feel safe and at peace.

This is just the general idea of the program, but if I find the time I will elaborate on what we have learned each session. We are starting our last piece this week and then will begin maintenance to continue practicing the techniques until Waffle's Birthday!
